Show Us the Father, and It Is Enough
John 14:8–17
Exposition
“Just show me God.” Have you ever thought that? Philip did. After walking with Jesus, hearing his teachings, witnessing his miracles, he still says, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” (v.8)
Jesus’ reply is both gentle and astonishing: “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.” In that moment, Jesus declares the deepest truth of the Christian faith: God is not far off. He is not a distant judge hiding behind the clouds. He has come near. He has a face. He has a name. He is Jesus.
And then, as if this were not enough, Jesus makes a second promise: “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper… the Spirit of truth.” The invisible God not only walked among us—He now lives within us. The Spirit is not a vague force, but a divine Person who brings the presence of Jesus into our very soul.
Application
Do you ever feel like God is absent—like your prayers bounce off the ceiling? This passage reminds us: God is closer than your next breath. In your confusion, He is the wisdom speaking. In your weakness, He is the strength sustaining. In your loneliness, He is the Comforter abiding.
This truth transforms how we live. When we forgive someone, or stand for justice, or speak words of hope—it’s not just us. It’s the Spirit of Jesus working through us. So take courage: you're not left alone. The very Spirit who hovered over creation, who raised Christ from the dead, dwells in you.
Transform Our Heart Through Prayer
Jesus, we long to see the Father—and you have shown Him to us. Thank you. Send your Holy Spirit into our hearts afresh. When we feel alone, remind us that you are here. When we feel weak, empower us. Let us walk in love, live in truth, and rest in your presence.
Amen.
