The Father’s Heart for the Lost

Reading: Luke 15:11-32

Exposition: Struggling with Guilt and Grace

The parable of the prodigal son is one of the most powerful pictures of God’s grace. A wayward son squanders his inheritance and, in desperation, returns home expecting rejection. Instead, his father runs to meet him, embracing him with joy. The older son, however, resents this grace, believing his own faithfulness has earned him more.

Jesus tells this parable to reveal the heart of the Father—full of mercy, ready to restore the lost. Whether we identify with the prodigal who strayed or the older brother who struggles with self-righteousness, the message is clear: God’s love is not earned; it is freely given.

Application: Accepting and Extending Grace

We often struggle to accept grace, feeling we must prove ourselves worthy. Yet God invites us to receive His love freely. In the same way, we are called to extend this grace to others, resisting the temptation to judge or compare. By embracing both aspects of the Father’s love—His forgiveness for us and His call to show mercy—we reflect the heart of Christ.

Transform Our Heart Through Prayer

Father, thank You for Your extravagant grace. Help me to fully receive Your love and extend that same mercy to others. Keep my heart free from bitterness and comparison. Holy Spirit, shape me into a reflection of Your compassion. Amen.
